Start here
Start at the Sam’s Point visitor center in Cragsmoor and use the official Loop Road itinerary.
Terrain & what to see
Carriage-road outing on the high ridge. Wind and sun can influence the day even without a scramble.
Dwarf pine scenery and Lake Maratanza; the Ice Caves are a separate excursion.
Before hiking
Check current peak-season weekend and holiday reservation requirements before travelling. Bring layers and water. Follow lake rules and closures; Lake Maratanza is not a swimming stop.
Landscape & trail notes
The official visitor-center itinerary estimates 2.9 miles for Loop Road; the map legend labels the full road as three miles. This guide uses the visitor-center itinerary basis.
After the hike
If friends also want the Ice Caves, review that excursion separately with its full distance and access status. Do not quietly add it to a group’s agreed lake day.
