1800s · 1836 · November 22

Thomas Cole married Maria Bartow on November 22, 1836, and Cedar Grove became their home. His personal history adds a human scale to the region’s landscape-painting story. Compare your own landscape photograph with questions a painter might ask: what did you include, crop out or emphasize? This is an observation exercise, not a claim that your viewpoint appears in a particular painting.
