Before 1800 · 1777 · October 16

British forces burned Kingston on October 16, 1777. The Senate House account places this destruction within the turbulent months when Kingston served as New York’s first capital. Today’s streets do not provide a complete map of that event. Investigate survival, rebuilding and remembrance without assuming every old-looking building witnessed the fire. Save the source, then compare its account with interpretation at the historic site.
