Long Path Section 23 connects Palenville with the North Lake area using routes associated with the mountain’s historic travel network. The official guide discusses the former Hotel Kaaterskill and Catskill Mountain House landscape. Use the 1892 Kaaterskill map to compare roads and building symbols with modern public paths. Instead of expecting a building at each symbol, ask what the arrangement says about travel, views and access in that period. Follow present-day marked trails and official interpretation. Historic hotel grounds and paths can be difficult to recognize, and an old line on paper may no longer be a usable route.
