Mining history, viewed from the public trail

The ridge’s industrial past is part of its story, but former mine areas are not an exploration destination.

Wurtsboro Ridge includes the legacy of historical lead mining. DEC identifies designated mine-related areas where public use is prohibited, including concerns associated with mine tailings and surface water. Read that history through maps and the land manager’s information while remaining on authorized trails. We intentionally do not publish mine entrances, shafts or an off-trail route into the restricted areas. A small building or excavation symbol on an old map cannot establish what survives, whether the ground is stable, or whether access is allowed. Use this story as a prompt to compare the industrial landscape with today’s forest, then check DEC’s current map and restriction notice before your hike.
