Choose ridge, lake or ravine
High Point and Sunrise Mountain suit a view-centered plan; Tillman Ravine offers a different woodland rhythm. Farther south, the Water Gap collection includes both hard climbing and quieter lake destinations. Pick the experience first, then read the specific route page rather than relying on a park name to estimate effort.
Use the town that fits your drive
Sussex, Wantage and Montague are useful references for High Point. Branchville and Sandyston help frame a Stokes day, while Walpack, Hardwick, Blairstown and Columbia organize the Water Gap side. These are drive-based connections. Check the actual lot before meeting friends, and do not mistake a municipal label in an app for a trail entrance.
Make a repeatable plan
Send the guide and chosen access point together. Keep a backup walk in mind if parking or a road closure changes the day. Afterward, note whether your track includes an extra lake circuit, an AT connector or only a waterfall visit. Those distinctions help the next hiker make a sensible comparison.
